Day 12- More Redwoods! (Christi)

September 20th, 2020

Eureka turned out to be bland, so we were more than happy to hit the road again. My keen eye spotted In-n-Out Burger as we were rolling out of town and Brandon was insistent on grabbing a burger for breakfast. Compared to the one in Kaiser, OR this establishment was a ghost town. With our stomachs full of burger, it was time to get peddling again.

The roughly 20 miles to our lunch stop was over before we knew it. We initially took the wrong exit, but this turned out in our favor. I spotted a local fruit stand that had fresh apple cider; the cider was refreshing on what was turning out to be a warm, muggy day. Few miles down the road we found Eel River Brewing Company. The food looked appetizing, but we weren’t incredibly hungry so we decided to skip food and just sample the beer.

20 miles to go to our stop for the day! We were heading back into the redwoods! Again we were traveling through backcountry with limited to no cell reception. The views were spectacular, and on our leg break we explored an area on the side of the road, climbing up onto a large fallen redwood that was like a natural jungle gym. It made for some great photos! The size of these trees is amazing! We rode through a few small towns, one listing it’s population as 50. This is where we found another fruit stand that had blackberry popsicles. We had to stop for one of these!

Brandon found the perfect, natural lounge chair

This fallen tree was HUGE

Pay it forward popsicle ❤

Along with the heat came a slight breeze and smoky air. It wasn’t super unpleasant to breath, but you could tell it was hazy out when gazing on the mountains in the distance. By the evening the smoke was starting to dissipate and could hardly be smelled in the air.

We spent the night in Redcrest in a cabin resort. During a normal season, minus coronavirus, I’m sure this place is packed. They have multiple outdoor activities available, I.e. volleyball, tetherball, frisbee golf, and a hot tub. Pulling in around 4pm it was clear this place was a ghost town. They don’t have a grocery store, but you can find a walk-through tree and a few gift shops.

Cute cabin Brandon found last minute

Tomorrow we will finish our ride along the Avenue of the Giants and be another 40 miles south!

Road stats: 41.14 miles and 1,196 feet elevation gain

Weird things on the shoulder: mascara, enema bottle, pool noodle, hundreds of bottle caps, 3 masks, loofah, tackle box, 2 pillows, and 4 CO2 canisters
