Day 17- Last Day Before San Francisco! (Christi)

Fort Ross State Historic Park- windmill

September 25th, 2020

We woke up to another short day of riding. Today’s adventures would take us about 28 miles into Bodega Bay. Our journey prior to Jenner, CA consisted mostly of crazy hills along the coast that had shear drop offs to one side without a guard rail to prevent you from launching off the side and into the ocean. This was the first time on the trip that I didn’t just let the bike take me down a hill, attempting to go as fast as possible, typically 30+ MPH. It was terrifying and my brakes got a workout! There was also a fair amount of construction work happening on this road so it wasn’t a smooth ride either. The cars were mostly respectful during this section.

Contemplating how far he can launch himself (parachute is in the back) 😂; also the rare guardrail is present

One of the first places we came across was Fort Ross. We didn’t explore much at this park, eager to get to the next place, but we had to see the windmill (pictured above) and as we continued down the road, we found a good spot to view part of the fort itself.

Small section of Fort Ross. Beautiful views!

12 miles later and we were in Jenner, CA; time for lunch! Not much was open, but Cafe Aquatica had some great views and food! I also picked up a set of bamboo utensils and a cool sticker.

Smoked salmon cream cheese bagel and clam chowder 🤤

Little bird came by to say hello and eat leftover crumbs

As we pulled into camp, 11 miles later, in Bodega Bay, we were ecstatic that tonight would be the last night setting up the tent. And boy were we in for an adventure. It was SO windy! So we staked the tent down, threw our bags in, and rode off to find dinner before we had to go to bed. Tonight would be an early night, since we had a long day ahead of us into San Francisco the next day. Fishetarian Fish Market had some bomb fish tacos and Brandon’s fish and chips didn’t look too shabby either! We also had to stop for some salt water taffy on the way. Despite the wind, the views were great, and I even saw a little seal popping out of the water to say hello.

It was bed time by 7pm, off to San Francisco tomorrow!

Not a bad view to fall asleep to

Road stats: 28.82 miles and 2,118 feet elevation gain

Road kill: 2 bambis 😢

Weird things in the shoulder: drill bit, 3 masks (didn’t pay much attention because I was trying not to die falling off cliff edges)

  1. I would have had a heart attack at the section with no guard rails!
