Day 6 - Blue Skies All Around Me! (Christi)

First time we’ve seen the ocean and blue skies!

    September 14th, 2020

Not sure why we love to torture ourselves, but the Seven Devil’s Road Brandon described in his post was no joke! Without warming our legs up properly, we were hit with multiple up hill battles that required “granny gear”. My legs were toasty by the last big hill and they welcomed the downhill portions. We continued to be plagued by fog and low-visibility.

After crossing another death bridge, we were blessed with a 2-mile stretch of shoulder completely covered with gravel. This last stretch brought us into Bandon and gave Brandon his next flat tire!

Brandon with his second flat tire (as you can see).

Bandon was a cool town and will be a future destination via car. See below for some savory food pictures. It was here we finally saw blue skies after indulging at Bandon Rain Unique Craft Ciders.

Bandon Rain had cool rain cloud and rain drop lights. The record player was also a sweet touch.

Dozens of pictures were taken after our lunch stop due to the blue skies. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see the sun and blue skies before (see my giant grin on Brandon’s blog post 😂). After Bandon we had about 30 miles to go and stopped about 15 times for pictures. I found another lighthouse! We chose not to ride to it, but I was treated with a glimpse of it from across the water. Sadly Cape Blanco State Park was closed so I missed out on that lighthouse.

Coqui Lake Lighthouse

We passed through two historic towns; Langlois was established in 1881 and Port Orford, being the oldest townsite on Oregon’s coast, was established in 1851. This stretch of the trip taught us some valuable history lessons.

America’s strange and bloody history

Six miles to the campground and we were toast! If you get the chance to make it down to Humbug Mountain state park it was a treat! Will definitely be back this way for hiking adventures! Our night was capped once the tent was up and warm food was in our bellies. Time to rest up for our personal record day- fourth day of 50+ miles in a row.

Road stats: 60.13 miles and 2,779 feet elevation gain

Road kill: 1 porcupine and 1 salamander (He got ran over twice 😬)

Weird things in the shoulder: Teva sandal, beach towel, 2 gloves (not matching), “mama and baby” Fireball empty bottles, one and a half bottles of urine, and a slipper
