Day 3 (rest day)- Road Crew Profile (Brandon)

Due to fires surrounding Lincoln city, we decided to take a rest day and drive through to Newport, avoiding the smoke. Since there was not a ride to report for today, I decided to make a profile of our unplanned road team and their heroics!

Hannah

Head Chef, Sherpa, road support

Hannah volunteered months ago to drive us to Astoria to begin our trip. Once she found out our itinerary included some of her favorite state parks she decided to join us for several nights along the way, driving my car along the route with supplies, and saving us lots of weight that we otherwise would have needed to carry. Hannah also came in clutch with some amazing seafood chowder that we made two dinners out of. 😋 

With the smoky conditions, and unplanned re-routing, Hannah continued her services all the way to Florence, and we’ll miss her help throughout the rest of the journey. Thank you!

Davita

Chief of surgery

Davita was a late addition to the road team, jumping on board a few days before the start, to join us for our first night at Nehalem Bay state park. She brought along her little sweetheart of a pup Hank. Davita never fails to ensure that everyone on a trip is having a good time and feels included, she is an awesome person, and was a joy to have along with us for a couple days. She was also pressed into emergency service as team surgeon helping to remove a stubborn splinter in my foot. Thank you Davita, you saved the day!

Maya

Maya was an even later addition, joining Davita and Hank with her pup (and my new best friend) Sadie. Maya and Hannah held a yoga session on the beach doing crazy headstands, that made me acutely aware of my physical limitations. Maya also offered up her skills as a hair stylist, giving Christi and I fancy braids to help our helmets fit better, not really a problem for me, but it was fun having braids for a couple days. Thank you Maya! 

The road is going to get a lot quieter without our road team the rest of the journey, we’ll be on the lookout for new friends, but with all the craziness of 2020 we haven’t seen many fellow bicycle travelers thus far, fingers crossed.
